High Permeability Alloys IconSMA 48, 50 - High Permeability Alloys

Alloy Description

SMA 48, 50 - These alloys possess a very high saturation flux density of any Nickel-Iron alloy. This high saturation flux density combined with high magnetic permeability and low core loss makes them versatile alloys with many potential applications. They are primarily used in laminated cores for instrument transformers, magnetic shield and cores for all certain electronic and communications devices in which extremely high permeability at low magnetizing forces greatly increases the efficiency and effectiveness of the equipment.

Composition

SMA 50 has following composition:

Alloy Ni% Mn% Si% C% Fe% Others%
SMA 50 47.5 – 50.0 1.0 max. 0.30 max. 0.10 max. Balance ++

The chemistry is so adjusted that the alloy shall have highest saturation flux density in the family of all nickel iron alloys.

Heat Treatment

Good results are only obtained by proper heat treatment of finished components. This consists of heating the components in temperature range exceeding 950°C, holding at this temperature and then cooling at determined cooling rate. Controlled atmosphere or very dry gases such as hydrogen or cracked ammonia is necessary to prevent the parts from oxidation. Every manufacturer determines their own heat treatment procedure depending upon raw materials used, its previous history, cold work done and the end properties required. JLC can assist in designing a proper heat treatment cycle.
